Dear Future 8th Grade Students,
Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, spend time with your family and friends and explore new interests. It is also a time where you don’t have to worry about tests and homework and you could spend time relaxing and taking part in enjoyable activities. This summer I want to invite you to look at your summer reading as a fun, relaxing and enjoyable activity.
The best way to accomplish this is to choose books that you like and find interesting. For some of you, that means reading novels with fictional characters and plots, while others will prefer to read biographies or books about history. Regardless, my goal is to keep you reading during the summer. You should be reading every day or most days. Read thoughtfully, discuss what you read with family and friends, and keep track of what you read so you can share your thoughts with our class in the tab labeled Blog. I have set up this blog for that purpose. Now, you can hold discussions on books; ask questions of your classmates and make suggestions or recommendations even if you are miles away.
In 8th grade, we have a required book which everyone must read. For September 5th, 2014, you will have to complete book jacket project for the mandatory novel, Rumble Fish by S.E. Hinton, after you read it. The directions for completing the book jacket can be found on the tab labeled Book Jacket. Additionally, you will be asked to read informational articles and answer questions. These articles will be found in the tab labeled In the News English 8.
I am enclosing a suggested list of books. These are just suggestions. If
you find additional books that are on your level and you want to read them,
you can. You will only have to do a book jacket for your required book. If you
choose to read more books this summer, and I hope that you do, you do not
have to do additional projects. However, you encouraged to keep track of
your additional reading in a log found in the tab labeled Book Log. If you have
any questions, you can email me at [email protected]. I
regularly check my email and will respond to your questions.
I look forward to meeting all of you in September and to hear about your summer reading adventures. I hope you all have a safe and happy summer!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Fuccilli
